New City: San Francisco
Today we are launching our 10th city on Tunnel Time: San Francisco. The tech hub of the world has been the location of many recent (and not so recent) trends in transportation. The ride sharing boom began in San Francisco with giants like Uber, Lyft and many others. More recently, SF has been ground zero for many e-scooter start-ups (Bird, Lime, Skip, etc.) as many players fight for marketshare in the last mile transportation market.
Before these tech giants called SF their home, the city was the first place in the world to implement cable cars. They also honour the world’s streetcars and trams with their Historical Streetcar fleet.
San Francisco has two transit operators that serve the city and the Bay Area: Muni and BART. While Muni and BART share some stations in the city and payment methods (Clipper Card), their differences and nuances can be a little different than what you’re used to.
There are multiple ways you can purchase entrance onto MUNI and BART.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is the train transportation system that serves San Francisco and the East Bay area.
The Muni Metro is the electric light rail system that serves San Francisco.
San Francisco has dozens of antique streetcars from around the world.
JUMP Bikes are pedal assist electric bikes that can go up to 32 km/h (20 mph).
Bay Wheels (formerly Ford GoBike) is a network of docked, rentable bicycles.
