How to Board & Exit The Muni Metro
The Muni Metro vehicles operate both above ground and underground in different areas of the city. The entrance to each car actually changes as it makes the transition from inside to outside, so boarding the same Muni Metro car can be different depending on what station or stop you board.
Boarding a Muni Metro at an Above Ground Stop
When the Muni Metro is at an above ground stop on the street, board the vehicle at the driver's doors. You pay your fare at the machine next to the driver. If you have a transfer, a pass or use the smartphone app to pay your fare, then you can board at any door.
Boarding a Muni Metro Train in a Station
To board a Muni Metro train in a station, you must first purchase your ticket from one of the kiosks and enter the station through the gates. If you have a pass, transfer or are using the smartphone app, you can show the attendant in the ticket booth and they will let you pass through the gates.
Transfer Rules
You can transfer to and from Muni Bus and Muni Metro as long as it is within a 90 minute window of your first payment. There are no additional charges for transferring between different Muni Metro or Muni Bus routes.
