How to Board & Exit a Bus
To get picked up by a bus, all you need to do is stand at a bus stop. If you are boarding a bus, you will have to board at the front of the vehicle near the driver door.
Unlike the subway, you must request a stop and open the doors yourself to exit a bus. To request a stop on a bus, push the yellow strip, pull the yellow line or press a red stop button. To exit at the back of the bus, you will have to open the doors yourself once the green light above the doors turns on. Some buses will automatically have the rear doors open if you press the yellow stop-request strip on the door.
Transfer Rules
Local Bus
You can freely transfer to and from a bus to an adjacent bus, or subway route. If you paid your fare with MetroCard, you will get free transfer for 2 hours from your initial swipe. If you paid your fare with cash (exact change, no pennies) you must ask the driver for a transfer.
Express Bus
If you wish to transfer from an subway to an Express Bus, you must pay the fare difference (an additional $4.10) as Express Buses cost $7.00 to ride. This can be done by swiping your MetroCard, or paying cash with exact change (no pennies).
