Trams

Lisbon, Portugal

The old trams are the iconic symbol of the city of Lisbon. There are six tram lines throughout the city that serve over 26 km of track. Lisbon has very steep roads throughout the city and the smaller trams are often the best way to access these parts of the city.

How to Board & Exit The Tram

The trams in Lisbon are extremely popular. Not only do locals rely on these routes for their daily commute, but tourists have discovered that riding the entire E28 line is a great way to see the city. This has resulted in extremely congested trams and long wait times at the tram stops. In our experience, your only chance to get on a tram is to board at the ends of the line. Even then, you may still have to wait for over an hour. Note: this doesn't apply for the E15 route. E15 uses a much larger articulated tram and travels west to Algés, not through the city of Lisbon. To board a tram, wave down the driver while standing at a stop. Board at the front doors and pay your fare in cash to the fare box or by tapping your Viva Viagem card. Your fare will be less expensive if you have a Viva Viagem Card. When the tram stops at your desired destination, exit at the rear doors.

If you want to try your luck with one of the traditional trams (or are looking to ride the 15E) check out GeoBus. GeoBus is an app for iOS that has real time bus (and tram) location information for the E12, E15, E18, E24, E25 and E28 tram routes.

Transfer Rules

There are no discounts in Lisbon for riders transferring to and from trams to other methods of transportation. If you need to transfer from the tram to a metro, bus, funicular or ferry route, you will need to pay a full second fare.
