Tokyo Metro & Subway
The subway in Tokyo is operated by two companies: Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. Together, they combine for 13 lines and 285 stations that serve 8.7 million riders every day. Subways are the primary mode of public transportation in Tokyo and should be your first choice when travelling in Tokyo.

How to Board & Exit The Subway
Every door will open up on each subway car automatically at each station. You do not need to request stops or press any buttons or levers to open the doors. When waiting on the platform for the subway, there are lines indicating where you should stand for each door so that you don’t get in the way of exiting passengers.
Transfer Rules
You can transfer to and from Toei Subway, Tokyo Metro and JR East Trains at overlapping stations. This is why it is important to know your route and final destination when purchasing your ticket, because these transfers will be included in your ticket price. If you are using an IC card, it will automatically charge you the correct fare when you tap in and out, even if you need to go through a turnstile mid-trip. Signs are available in each station to show which train cars you should board to line up with the corresponding transfer you need to make. These cars will line up with the staircase or hallway you need to take from that platform to properly make your transfer.
