Distance System
The Kuala Lumpur MRT operates on a distance based fare system. Ticket prices range depending on the number of stations travelled. Ticket prices also depend on your payment method, where if you are paying by Journey Token you’re subjected to a slightly more expensive ‘cash fare’ versus paying by a Cashless smart card.
Buying a Ticket
There are two ways to pay your fare when using the MRT subway in Kuala Lumpur.
Journey Token
You can purchase a blue single fare Journey Token from the automated vending machines in MRT stations. Follow the prompts at the kiosk and it will tell you your fare. Single fare tokens can be purchased with the available payment method outlined by the machine. In most cases, it’s coins and smaller denominations of bills.
Smart Card
There are a few types of smart cards available to use on the rapidKL rail network.
MyRapid TouchandGo
RM15.00 on first load (RM10.00 travel amount, RM5.00 issuing fee)
Concession Pass
This pass subsidizes the regular fare if and only if you are a Malaysian citizen who meets the eligibility criteria
KL TravelPass
RM75.00 for a single airport trip, RM120.00 for return airport trips
This pass enables two-day unlimited travel on the rapidKL rail network
You can load money onto this card, similar to the TouchandGo card, to enable travel by bus
MyCity Pass
RM25.00 for one-day, RM55.00 for three-day
This pass enables unlimited travel on the rapidKL rail network
How to Board & Exit The MRT
Follow signs for the MRT and pass through the turnstile by tapping an appropriate payment method (Myrapid TouchandGo card, Concession pass, KL Travelpass, MyCity Pass, or a Journey Token). Stand before the passage doors. Allow passengers to exit before boarding. The MRT will make automated stops so there is no need to request stops. Upon reaching your destination, tap your payment method once again at the exiting turnstile to leave.
Transfer Rules
There are no discounted fares or shared tickets when transferring between transit options. The rapidKL rail network fares are distance based. You can move from one line to another (eg. LRT, Monorail) at an interchange station.
