Singapore Public Transportation Fares & System Information
Singapore’s public transit system earned top marks by The McKinsey Group this year in their Global public transportation survey. While the backbone of transportation is above ground with buses and taxis, the MRT is available across the Island and the LRT serves smaller densely populated areas.
Distance System
Public transit in Singapore is a distance based transit system. Your fare price will be determined by how far you need to travel. Lines are identified by colour, terminal station and number. Some lines split and have multiple terminal stations. Each terminal station is also numbered so make sure you double check the direction of the train before you board.
Tickets
There are four different ticketing options available for MRT in Singapore: Standard Ticket, EZ-Link, MasterCard and Singapore Tourist Pass.
Standard Ticket
The Standard Ticket is a card ticket that can be used for up to 6 trips. This type of ticket is best for travelers who are only going to be in Singapore a few days or are not going to travel too much on public transit. There is a $1.00 deposit when purchasing this ticket from a ticketing kiosk, called General Ticketing Machine. Although you can use a standard ticket for up to 6 trips, you can only load one trip at a time on the card. If you want your deposit back after completing your trip, you must return the card to the General Ticketing Machine.
EZ-Link card
The EZ-Link card is the reloadable public transportation card in Singapore. You can purchase EZ-Link cards at the ticketing office in MRT stations. The cards require a $5.00 non-refundable deposit and require you to maintain a minimum balance on the card of $3.00. EZ-Link cards can be reloaded at the ticketing office or at the General Ticketing Machine.
Singapore Tourist Pass
The Singapore Tourist Pass is an unlimited travel pass designed for tourists visiting Singapore and planning to travel on public transit a lot. The pass comes in three different options and gives you unlimited travel on local buses, MRT and LRT.
1 Day - $10.00
2 Day - $16.00
3 Day - $20.00
There is a $10.00 deposit required for the card, but this is refunded as long as you return the pass within 5 days of original purchase. The Singapore Tourist Pass is available for sale at Changi Airport at the Information desk and select MRT stations: Ang Mo Kio, Bayfront, Bugis, Changi Airport, Chinatown, City Hall, Farrer Park, HarbourFront, Jurong East, Kranji, Lavender, Orchard, Raffles Place, Somerset, Tanjong Pagar and Woodlands.
MasterCard & Visa
Earlier this year MasterCard announced that riders can now use their credit, debit and prepaid contactless cards to use public transportation in Singapore. Visa later announced support for Singapore’s contactless transit system as well. This includes MasterCard and Visa products that are loaded onto smartphones as part of a mobile wallet application. Tap in and out just like you would an EZ-Link card, and your fare amount will be charged to your card when your trip is complete.
