TTC Fare Changes in Toronto

We’ve always prided ourselves on having up to date information here at Tunnel Time. One of the main reasons we started the site was that almost all of the information we would find when planning a trip to a new city was many years old and often out of date or no longer relevant.

Today marks an important day in our hometown of Toronto, Canada. Today (November 30th, 2019) is the last day that you’ll be able to purchase TTC paper tickets, tokens or Day Passes. We’ve seen many cities transition away from ticket and token based fare systems in favour of reloadable transit cards or credit cards.

Part of us is a little sad to see these iconic items be discontinued, but we’re sure most people would agree it is for the better. Toronto is a perfect city for this website because there were at one time seven ways of paying your fare to take the same trip. Simplifying Toronto’s public transit fare payment system is needed to modernize TTC payment options. Metrolinx (the organization that runs Presto Card, TTC’s reloadable payment card) is looking to update the Presto Card system to allow credit card payments.

We’ve updated Toronto’s Tickets & Fares page on Tunnel Time to reflect these changes. While existing riders with tokens and tickets will still be able to use previously purchased tickets and tokens, new tickets, tokens and passes will no longer be for sale.
