London System Overview

London System Overview

Zone System

London public transit operates on a zone system. Fare prices are determined by which zone in the city you begin and end your trip. On the London Underground system map, the grey and white numbers in the background indicate which zone each station is in.

Zone Example

  • Oxford Circus (Zone 1) to Bank (Zone 1) - Fare: £2.40

  • Oxford Circus (Zone 1) to Ealing Broadway (Zone 3) - Fare: £2.80

Peak & Off Peak

Depending on your location and the time of day you are travelling, your fare may be increased. You are charged more if you travel during peak hours which are: Monday to Friday 6:30 to 9:30 and 16:00 to 19:00. All other times, including public holidays, are considered off peak hours and you are charged a regular rate. Using our examples from above, you can see not every route is increased for Peak travel.

Peak & Off Peak Example

  • Oxford Circus (Zone 1) to Bank (Zone 1) - Fare: £2.40 (Anytime)

  • Oxford Circus (Zone 1) to Ealing Broadway (Zone 3) - Fare: £2.80 (Off Peak) or £3.30 (Peak)

Single Fare Finder

London fares can be a bit more complex than other cities because of the zone system in combination with the peak & off peak pricing. Luckily, TfL has provided a great resource on their website that allows you to search your route and get exact fare information.
